VPLEX – Distributed devices

A distributed device spans clusters in a Metro or Geo config.  A distributed device is created with previously created devices or by mirroring a local device remotely.  Adding a distributed device to a consistency group will automatically create a volume on the device.  If the device is not added to a consistency group then it is optional whether or not a volume is created.  With Geo there are additional asynchronous options not available with Metro configuration.  Initial data synchronization is optional but recommended if there is data that requires protection on the device; virtual volumes are automatically synchronized overwriting the target device.  A logging volume must exist before a distributed device can be created; if a logging volume must be specified then CLI will be required, otherwise the GUI will automatically select one if available.  The logging volumes are created as part of the initial system setup and required to keep track of changes during a loss inter-cluster communication.

Go to Provision Storage > Distributed > Distributed Devices.

  1. Click Create.
  2. Follow the wizard

Example:

Storage Volume in Cluster-1 SiteA_SAN1_LUN1000 has corresponding SV in Cluster-2 at SiteB_SAN1_LUN1000

Cluster-1 has extent_SiteA_SAN1_LUN1000_1 with corresponding extent at Cluster-2 extent_SiteB_SAN1_LUN1000_1

from Cluster-1 device_SiteA_SAN1_LUN1000_DATE_100200

for distributed volume dvol_LUN1000 with rule cluster-1-detaches and visible to both sites
